My university has moved to the current trendy setup of 403b at universities by having a small set of core funds plus a brokerage window at TIAA. While the set of core funds includes a low cost S&P 500 index fund, it does not have a more preferable low cost total market index fund. I learned that Fidelity Total Market Index Fund is available in the brokerage window but it is a fund with a transaction fee of $35, however it will be waived during the first year. Then I heard the presenter said the following (or at least I thought heard): There is no transaction fee if you purchase the fund via contribution. This seems strange. Does anyone have any experience in this? (I do plan to ask TIAA when I have the opportunity to talk to the advisor assigned to our university, but she is quite busy at the moment.)
