My son-in-law has just finished an MS in materials engineering. One of his professors encouraged him to pursue a PhD in Manufacturing Engineering.
We have discussed a lot of non-financial issues of such a degree--time commitment, personal fulfillment, interest in the research subject matter his mentoring professor suggests, etc. But what we don't have a good answer to a simple question, will a PhD be worth it financially for him? Will a PhD in manufacturing engineering make financial sense? Do BHers think the degree will open professional opportunities for him?
Or, would it make more financial sense to be satisfied with his MS and pursue a P.E.?
