I am looking into buying dental insurance or discount plans. I have read the relevant posts. To summarize:
1. The main benefits are in-network price discounts and/or tax savings if the premium is paid pre-tax;
2. However, the potential pitfalls are: small network, caps on benefits, co-payments, nonperformance (insurance refuses to pay or pays too little), underutilization if one only needs preventative care.
So, if one needs more than preventative care and can find a good dentist in the insurer's network, it may make sense to buy from a reputable insurer. But in my case, my dentist had kept referring me to other specialists for major procedures such as root canal, Bridge, extraction. This means, even if one can find a insurance plan that has the dentist in the network, s/he may have to go out of network when seeking care for those major procedures, thus negating much of the insurance benefits.
I was wondering if anyone was in a similar situation and how to cope with it.
