Personal Consumer Issues • Light carry on luggage - Tom Bihn Techonaut or Synik? Organizational tips?

I've been a long-time "one-bag" carry on traveler. I can usually fit 10 days worth of clothes in an Osprey Daylight 40L wheeled bag. Wheels are great when you go from airport to rental car to hotel, but for off the beaten path travel, it's cumbersome. I have a backpacking backpack for those situations, but it too is cumbersome with all of the cords and zips, hip belt, etc. I'd like something light, slim, but can fit a lot.

We are going on a trip that involves a couple very small bush planes and a 30 lb luggage weight limit. After getting a Tom Bihn backpack, I'm sold on their stuff. I've been looking a 30L Techonaut or Synik to replace the 40L Osprey. Anyone have experience with these bags?

Both seem to have great reviews, and while I don't like the school bag look of the Synik, I can see the pockets being useful.

I'm also concerned that 30L may not be big enough for some trips. If I am taking a hiking trip, I may not want to wear my hikers on the plane, yet they take up a huge part of my 40L bag. Same with layers for cold weather travel.

We generally book places with laundry, so I don't need 10 full sets of clothing for a trip.

I'd love to hear from other lightweight one-bag travelers on what they use. I'm also interested in recommendations on travel organizers. I have used Eagle Creek and Amazon brand packing cubes, but sometimes they impart a plasticy smell on whatever is packed in them. Is that normal? (I wash them after every trip).
