My son(age 20) is transferring and moving to FL(UF) this fall as a junior in college. He is in a combined BS/MD(3+4) program so will start a medical school in fall 2025. We are planning to get him in-state residency for tuition purpose and his med school in FL has a mandate that he cant be claimed as dependent on our tax return when he starts a med school. Please let me know how best to handle this situation.
Son: Age 20 now and will be 21(June) before he starts Med School in fall 2025. He'll only get his BS degree in May 2026 after he finishes one year of Med school so M1 year will be counted towards both BS and MD.
How do I get him insurance on ACA plan if I cant claim him as dependent on my tax year next year? As mentioned here that I shall be able to get him insurance as he is under the age 26, but how? https://www.healthcare.gov/young-adults ... -under-26/
Since he will start a Med School in fall 2025, for FAFSA purpose he will file as Independent student but I do not understand why UF or Florida requires that he cant be claimed as dependent on parent's tax return. My daughter finished Med School in NJ and her colleagues from OOS filed FAFSA as independent student but their parents claimed them as dependent. I also claimed my daughter as dependent on my tax returns even though she submitted her FAFSA as independent student being in the Med School.
I also have question about how to best approach his in-state residency for next year when he starts a Med school but I will start a separate thread
I am on ACA with wife and two sons currently on the plan(I pay $50/Month in premium for HDHP for the family)
UF offers student health insurance but cost for the year would be 3K - That is lot of money compared to what I currently pay.
We live in NJ and have no plans to move to FL
