Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Learning to fly

Hi everyone,
I’ve been pretty interested in aviation for some time. As I approach 40 and enter prime midlife crisis time, I’ve been thinking of finally taking the plunge and going after my private pilot license. Have never flown in anything but the passenger compartment of an airliner before. I know this is a pretty bad financial move, but I was wondering how bad? The flight school at my local airport quotes around 12k for a PPL. What’s the ballpark yearly spend to maintain that/maintain some degree of competence after getting trained? I think I’d probably join a flying club or rent a plane. 4 figures? 5 figures?
Thanks.
