My husband recently died. I am due to have a phone conversation with SS soon. I have my own SS benefit which was WEP'ed, it is about half of my husband's benefit. However, if I were to take his benefit, the Govt Pension Offset would apply, Given the amount of my pension, that would then mean I would get none of his, nor mine anymore. Does anyone know if I can just say I don't care to take his spousal benefit? If I say why, would they require that I take it and then apply the GPO and so I would have no SS income?
