Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Is Medigap coverage retroactive?

I'll be turning 65 later this year and according to https://www.medicare.gov/basics/get-sta ... gap-policy
If you’re under 65, you might not be able to buy a Medigap policy, or you may have to pay more.
I know I want a medigap policy, my question is since I have to wait until after I'm 65 to purchase a policy what happens if I have medical bills soon after turning 65? Is it like COBRA where the policy is retroactive to the start of the month? Or should I be very careful driving and crossing streets until the policy is actually issued? For that matter, how long does it take to get a policy issued after you apply?
