Personal Consumer Issues • Getting the family more into camping, hiking and the great outdoors

I'm a fan of camping, hiking, and most things outdoors. But trying to get young kids to go on (and enjoy) a hike or spouse to go camping when the bathrooms may not be the cleanest or have some bugs is a bit of a challenge. Getting a good night rest (I have enough sleeping bags, sleeping mats and tents for a small army) is critical. Good food always seems to help too along with going with friends.
I'm torn on travel trailers at this point (would rent first) but leaning towards tents for as long as enjoyable. I'm also torn on if we just continue to do quick 1 night camp outs near by but think adding a bigger, more "epic" type trip would pique some interest.

Anyway, I know there are a lot outdoor enthusiasts with families on here. What do you find most helpful for everyone to have a great time either hiking, camping or whatever else? Was there one "epic" trip that sparked things (if so, what was it) or was it more many experiences over time?
