Personal Investments • Investing Horizon Transition

Hello,

I am in my early 40s and decided to move from 100% equities to 85/15. I've been seriously researching all the different options for fixed income and decided that since my investing horizon is about 20 years from now, that the Fidelity Long Term Treasury Index (FNBGX) is the best fit. As I get closer to retirement though, my horizon will no longer fit the "long term" profile. My question is how to transition from long term fixed income to intermediate, and eventually short term fixed income. If I move assets from a long term fund to an intermediate term fund in 10 years (10 years out from retirement), then it wasn't really a "long term" investment in the first place.

Do I just let the long term investment ride for the next 20 years, and then in 10 years start putting new money into intermediate term funds?

I hope this question makes sense.

Thank you
