Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Contesting a will

An elderly cousin passed back in Aug. 2023. I just found out about it by receiving the petition to probate and copy of the will from his county probate court. He had never married or had children. His closest relatives were first cousins.

The executor is named as the sole beneficiary of the estate. The will was signed 4 days prior to my cousins passing. The executor/beneficiary is a neighbor. Of course, if the neighbor helped my cousin in his latter years then I have no problem with any of this. That this was all arranged only 4 days prior to my cousin's passing raises red flags. The witnesses seem to be from the executors family and his lawyer. That no attempt to contact any family members prior to now is also upsetting.

My cousin's Mom told me year's ago he was leaving his estate to his Alma mater, but I can't prove that.

Should I call the executor/beneficiary and try to get a feel for him?
