Personal Consumer Issues • Supplements to improve sleep, mood

I (early 50s male) take a daily supplement for men, but that's it. Otherwise I eat a healthy diet, get enough exercise, etc. I am skeptical of the usefulness of most supplements, as many/most lack convincing body of double-blind studies. I am in good health, non-smoker, not overweight, etc., but I do have trouble with sleep, especially staying asleep/falling back asleep after waking up to use the bathroom. At this time of night, I often am subject to zillions of thoughts (good, bad, and indifferent) rampaging through my brain, and I often feel physically restless.

I have implemented all the usual sleep hygiene advice: keep the bedroom cool, dark, no caffeine after lunch, limit alcohol, sugar, get regular exercise, exposure to natural light, don't stay in bed too long if you can't sleep, etc, etc, etc. However, I still struggle on some nights. At this point, I am ready to experiment with some additions to diet (recently: kiwi, walnuts, grapes after dinner), and also supplements. I discussed this with my dr, and, while he is skeptical as well, he stated that he sees no problems (for me) in trying magnesium-threonate, myo-inositol, apigenin, etc. I like to try one thing at a time, so I ordered a bottle of myo-inositol/500mg tablets. There are some peer-reviewed studies in support of its benefits for sleep and minimizing stress.

I have been watching Matt Walker's (sleep expert, professor at U.C. Berkeley) work, videos. I have not read his book yet but it is on my list. I have also been watching some of Andrew Huberman's videos on YouTube. Both very highly qualified and engaging speakers. I highly recommend these; some very interesting and eye-opening insights to be gained.

What if any supplements have you found useful for sleep, and improving mood (specifically for me, I am interested in anything that can buffer stress)??

What brands do you trust?

How much and when do you take these supplements?

Any other useful sleep advice?

Thanks.
