Investing - Theory, News & General • What happens to returns if Index funding gets far more popular/or it gets phased out as Investors move to new product?

Two somewhat related amateur questions:

If Index investing gets more popular over time, what does that mean as far as future returns (in terms of increasing or decreasing) for someone like myself (and other Bogleheads) that has bought and held index funds for the last 15 years or so?

Index investing has been around since the 1970s. What would it mean to shareholders of index funds if indexing is only a phase and investors move to the next new investment product?

Thank you for any input.
