I'm 55 and 5 years away from retirement. Spouse is 58 and retired.
We are fortunate that we have 2 houses, our main house for the last 20+ years and a lake house 120 miles from our permanent residence.
Where we live now is the same town I grew up in, so other than college and a short time after, I've basically lived here for 45+ years.
It's nice and safe suburban town, close to a major metropolitan area (in the Midwest), etc etc.
But I'd like to experience new things in retirement.
For a host of reasons, retiring to lake house is not an option, but I would still like to keep it as we enjoy our time there and kids/grandkids like to visit. I also realize I do not want 2 homes in retirement.
My thought is to sell the main house and rent year to year in other areas of the state, all within 150 miles of our lake house so we can still enjoy that.
Maybe 1 year we rent in a vibrant neighborhood in downtown.
Maybe 1 year we rent in our state capital which is a vibrant college town with tons to do.
Maybe 1 year we spend 6 months renting in a warmer climate and 6 months at the lake house.
Maybe 1 year we skip the lake house and live abroad
Has anyone done something similar? We'd have the lake house to store necessary personal belongings and we could minimize what we would have to move year to year (a couple pieces of furniture, bikes, dishes, clothes, etc).
From a financial perspective, the proceeds from the house and earnings on those proceeds would easily pay for 15+ years of rent.
