Online banks’ customer service has drastically deteriorated.
I’ve used Capital One and Ally Bank for years. Capital One’s customer service is not good, so I’ve been keeping my savings, checking and all my Roth IRA CDs with Ally, but Ally has become so incredibly bad that I am totally done with them.
I greatly prefer to resolve simple issues online (e.g. via secure email or chat) rather than on the phone, for numerous reasons.
In a nutshell, here’s what I want ... An online bank with:
1) A savings account with a competitive interest rate;
2) A checking account that isn’t going to hit me with surprise fees;
3) Bill paying, including the ability to set up recurring bill payments;
4) CDs (for my Roth IRA) with competitive interest rates; and
5) Decent online customer service in which a competent human will read my message and quickly and accurately resolve simple issues.
I guess I could simplify this by just asking for a bank that has numbers 4) and 5) above, because I can break off numbers 1) - 3) and probably adequately take care of those items using Capital One and my credit union.
(An example of a simple issue that I would often like to have resolved: When one of my CD matures and I see that I can get a better rate by changing the term of the CD on renewal, I would like to be able to contact the bank [preferably before the maturity date, but at least within the grace period afterward] and ask them to change the term of the CD, and have the bank actually do that without any major problems. Ally Bank, for example, can no longer handle that simple transaction.
So far, every other online bank I’ve looked at has had some major issue, or extremely bad reviews from actual customers. I was considering Fidelity Investments because a lot of people in this forum have written highly of them, but I saw a lot of bad customr reviews of Fidelity online, and I prefer bank CDs over brokered CDs.
I realize I’m being overly demanding, asking for competive rates AND customer service, but does anyone out there know of any bank that still offers both?
Thank you for any constructive suggestions.
