Personal Investments • Need some help with transfer agent AST/Equiniti

I own some shares in a company that are held by a transfer agent AST which is now Equiniti. I am joint tenant on the account with my mom and siblings.

We want to move these shares to a brokerage account so we can decide how to proceed with them. Frankly, I am not even sure of the role of the transfer agent as these shares were inherited by my mother years ago and she added my siblings and I to this account.

I have spoken to Schwab, but my question lies in the account ownership. My mom initially added us to this account I believe with the intention of the shares going to us if something happened to her. However, we just want to transfer these shares into her individual Schwab account. I suspect this might be an issue if all of our names are on the account with the transfer agent.

My mom makes less money than myself and my siblings, so I believe the best course if she chooses to sell the shares is for her to do so in her individual account to minimize her tax liability. To that end, I am wondering if I should try to remove our names from the account with the transfer agent, or open up a Schwab account with all of us just to make the transfer, then removing our names thereafter.

Any help is appreciated.
