Personal Finance (Not Investing) • HSA Reimbursement When I Paid in Full for Orthodontics

We began my son's estimated 24-month orthodontics treatment plan today. I used a check and paid the orthodontist in full today for the entire treatment plan. I cannot seem to find any definitive guidance from the IRS, or elsewhere, on when I can reimburse myself for the orthodontics treatment using my HSA funds. I see a lot of guidance online from FSA providers, who seem to advise that FSA account holders can be reimbursed if they paid for orthodontia in full up front. However, I have an HSA and IRS Pub. 502 specifically states, "You can include only the medical and dental expenses you paid this year, but generally not payments for medical or dental care you will receive in a future year. (But see Decedent under Whose Medical Expenses Can You Include, later, for an exception.) This is not the rule for determining whether an expense can be reimbursed by a flexible spending arrangement (FSA)."

Has anyone else found any guidance on if the IRS would consider my payment today that started the treatment plan a qualified medical expense that I can withdraw from my HSA immediately? I'm wondering if I've messed up by paying in full upfront. Thanks.
