Hello,
I used to work for Amazon when in the US. I permanently relocated to India 5 years ago. I left my 401K untouched when I returned to India.
I have now realized that I need to be reporting my 401K in India under "Foreign Assets" and file a form with Indian tax authorities to claim deferral of tax until withdrawal as specified by Indian Income Tax Law.
Indian tax authorities dictate that unless a special form is filed for deferral (form 10EE) any accrued income (dividend/interest/capital gain on sale of shares or units inside 401K) in a retirement fund outside India is taxable in India.
I was scanning through my 401K transaction history for the last 5 years and found the following entries.
* Entire amount in Vanguard Target Retirement 2020 exchanged out to Vanguard Target Retirement 2020 at a fresh NAV of $100
* Entire amount in Vanguard Target Retirement 2050 exchanged out to Vanguard Target Retirement 2050 at a fresh NAV of $100
* Entire amount in Vanguard Target Retirement 2055 exchanged out to Vanguard Target Retirement 2055 at a fresh NAV of $100
The related "Change in Market Value" is a sizeable amount totaling to about $10,000. The date of this exchange was 10 Mar 2021.
Question 1: What exactly happened here? Is this exchange done from a "fund" to a "trust"? Or is it a form of rebalancing?
Question 2: Is this a taxable event equivalent to realized capital gains if the account is considered a taxable account? (Unless 10EE is filed in India, accrued income in 401K is assumed to be taxable as per Indian IT laws)
Question 3: I also see a "recordkeeping fee" and a related change in market value on a quarterly basis. Is this sale of units/shares towards payment of the fee considered a taxable event in case of assumption of a taxable account?
Miscellaneous context:
Amazon switched from Vanguard to Fidelity for 401K services on 07 Jan 2021
