It is my understanding that when your spouse dies, that the surviving spouse will continue to collect the higher of the two SS benefits.
Asking for a friend who believes that his benefit (higher benefit) will die with him and his wife will continue to collect only her lower benefit. He believes that Social Security is making changes to how benefits are paid.
They both waited until their full retirement age before they started collecting social security.
