Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Rent a Timeshare ?

Hi Folks,

Many years a go I took my wife to a timeshare weekend so that she could experience dirty sales tactics and awful contracts. It worked well -- she just hears 'timeshare' and she mutters for 5 minutes. Today timeshare came up in conversation as in "whole/universal life insurance is as good as a timeshare", and I suggested that she could probably buy one for free.

Then off I went to see if my guess was correct. Close, but not quite. In so doing though, I came across timeshare rentals and at first blush they were cheaper than a hotel and offered more amenities and a better rental. The advert mentions rent and a maintenance fee.

What other charges (cleaning, e.g) ?
Liability ?
Whom do I call if a problem occurs ?
If I have a complaint ?

Any Boglers with experience renting a timeshare ? I found a couple of older threads discussing timeshare rentals but would like to hear newer and additional experiences. Please share.
