Oh boy.
Sorry for the length of the post.
I filed my 2023 taxes in March of this year. I prepared my own taxes as I have for over 40 years. This year I received a IRS letter from, the office of "Return Integrity Verification Ops!" When I first read the title I thought it was a scam letter.
It stated, that they (IRS) were reviewing my refund and were holding it for 60 days and, "We won't have more information before then" so don't bother contacting us!!
What...huh..
This year(2023) is admittedly different. I needed extensive medical treatment at a facility in Houston, Texas .
I have lived in Florida for the last 30 years and my treatment would mandate that I be in Houston for more than 120 days continually as well as other visits and treatments prior to that which would account to me being in Houston approximately 220 days in 2023.
Since, I am an immunocompromised patient I would stay in Houston between multiple appointments vs flying back and forth on planes and risk infection. It also helped minimize the expense (which would have been deductible),of flying back and forth. I saw that as a win financially and healthwise.
When I prepared my taxes the only deductions that I would use were prescriptions, transportation to and from the airport and lodging at $50/day per IRS guidelines. The room rate was actually costing approx $200/day. I never deducted a meal or any other peripheral expenses. I thought that was pretty spartan and reasonable.
I exceeded the standard deduction and medical threshold and the result was a $4,000 net refund.
I prepared using Turbo Tax as I always did and ran the costs many times.
Sixty days passed and I received my 2nd letter today. "We need an additional 60 days to send you a complete response on what action that we are taking on you account." (Don't bother calling us..we will write you when we are through..or words to that effect.)
No crying here but no fun fighting for your life and the IRS at the same time. I really do not have the energy for the battle that might lie ahead with the IRS.
Any suggestions while I wait? Any experience with the "Return Integrity Verification ops"? I think I found one of the jobs created with the 72,000 new IRS agents hired.
Thanks in advance and Thank you to all that served especially this Memorial Day Weekend.
