Personal Consumer Issues • Car with engine problems

The engine on one of my cars developed a misfiring piston. The car has newish tires (< 8000 miles, decent body. Cost of installing a reman engine would be around 5K. The value of the car with the old engine if it had been functioning would be only around 6-7K max. So, it doesn't make much sense to replace the engine.

I'm planning to buy a new car.

What should I do with the malfunctioning car? I could try and sell it to a junkyard, salvage or even private party (say a tinkerer) in an as-is condition (with disclosure). The scrap metal, cat, tires, engine core (*) should be worth something. It runs enough that I can take it to a local yard.

I could trade it to a dealer when buying a new car, but I'm guessing the dealer will just ship it off to auction/junkyard anyway and will pay less than either.

I've heard of services like carbrain, wheelzy etc., but no idea how legit they are.

Any suggestions (other than donating to charity, which is a possibility that I'm already considering)?

(*) When getting quotes for engine replacement, I was told that the old core would get me $700 off the price of a new/reman engine.
