Personal Investments • Is it too late to tax-loss harvest?

I checked my Vanguard account and discovered a couple stocks I have that are down significantly. (What a pleasant surprise...) Obviously I should have been more diligent, but if I sell them today, will I even be able to use the losses for my 2023 tax return? My fear is that the IRS will go by the settlement date, and since it's already Thursday and Monday isn't until January, the settlement date won't be until 2024. Anyone know how this works? Is it the date you sold it or the settlement date that counts?
