Non-US Investing • Where to break $500 Euro notes in the states?

My son will be traveling to Europe this summer for a college program. I happen to have a few 500 euro notes from doing business in Europe years ago. Is there any place here in the U.S. to break the notes into smaller euros so that he can have spenable euros on hand for his travels? I prefer not to send him with the $500 euro notes as I understand it may be a little bit of a challenge for him trying to break them in Europe. Worried he might get hustled in the process, etc...
