I’ve received a few vehicle damage claim letters from National Car Rental in recent months. At first I thought it was a scam, since I hadn’t rented the particular vehicle and the documentation looked suspect. But after receiving another letter I called to confirm. Apparently I’ve been accused (and there was a police report written) that I hit someone by pulling into their lane on the interstate. They “got my license plate” according to that report. National says I owe them $174 for mirror repairs.
I don’t know what to do. If I had knowingly hit someone I would’ve pulled over and made things right immediately. And I can’t confirm with absolute certainty that I wasn’t at fault of something - though of course that’s impossible to prove. At the same time it’s also very possible I’m being blamed for damage I didn’t cause. It would really shock me if I actually had caused it.
Any advice on how to go forward here? Not a huge financial issue, but this is a weird problem to approach.
