Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Should I sell all ESOP shares in 401(k)?

Happy Holidays!

I’m an employee of Lockheed Martin and, as part of my compensation package, get shares of Lockheed Martin common stock (LMT) in the ESOP in my 401(k). Current value of my 401(k) is $1.1M of which approximately 5% is in the LMT stock. Current value of LMT stock is $449/share.

My concern is that this stock is near its all-time high and I’d be surprised if it gets much higher. No science here, but my “gut feeling” is that it won’t get much higher. I guess you can say it’s more of an emotional thing. For the record, I’m just a worker bee and have no “inside” information.

My plan would be to sell all shares of LMT stock and reallocate into my other 401(k) funds: large cap index, medium and small cap index, and global equity. I’d still be accumulating new shares of the LMT common stock under the ESOP.

What are your thoughts? Is this a sound plan?
