Kinda weird, I don't know if it's all pharmacies, just CVS pharmacies, just CVS pharmacies around here... but locally, I suddenly realized (while looking to buy cortisone cream), that it really seems as if the square footage devoted to OTC health remedies has been cut sharply.
I didn't try to pace it off, but imagine a rectangle with the entrance at bottom and pharmacy counter at top. Draw a horizontal line demarcating only about a third of the store, at the top. Then draw a vertical line cutting that in half, only it's actually less than half; the left part is mostly "food"-in-air-quotes items. Then also snip off the right edge, because the shelves on the walls are devoted to what might be called "health electronics," blood pressure monitors, glucose monitors and so on.
So maybe less than 15% of floor space.
I swear it's much less than it was, say ten years ago. Am I just wrong about that? The drugstore was the place you went for the widest selection of OTC remedies. Now, they don't seem to have much more than the health-and-beauty-aids aisle of a big supermarket.
Where does CVS expect to make its money? It's not as if the front store was jammed with eager shoppers loading up on discounted Easter candy.
