Personal Consumer Issues • Golf Cart Battery Charging

Our golf cart's 6 premium lead acid batteries (48v) were just replaced at $1,200. Lithium batteries would have been over $3,000. They are supposed to last 5 years on average but mine only lasted 2 years because I charged them intermittently. If you leave the charger plugged in it detects the voltage of the batteries and shuts itself off at a certain level to avoid overcharging them, but doesn't start to recharge them again when the voltage drops. I was told to drive it at least every 2 weeks (hard in the winter) then plug the charger back in, or to unplug the charger for 30 seconds every 2 weeks.

Rather than to add another item to my endless list of routines I thought of a different solution.

I just ordered a digital outlet timer that I can program to supply AC to the charger whenever I want it to on a repeated basis, so hopefully this will solve the problem. I'd be interested to know if anyone else has done this and if there are any problems I should know about. Here is the one I ordered.
