We've lived in Georgia for many decades, and a few years ago we purchased a second home in South Carolina.
We planned to eventually move there and retire, so we went ahead and switched our DL's and a couple car registrations.
That established the SC home as our "primary residence" in the eyes of SC, allowing us to claim homestead exemption there.
The incentive for doing that is SC hammers the owners of second homes on property taxes (saves approx $7k every year).
(they also required proof that we had removed the homestead exemption claim on our Georgia home, which we submitted).
So for the past couple years, we have filed our income taxes as SC residents, and GA non-residents (wife still has GA wages).
In reality, we've stalled on actually relocating there. The houses are only 90 miles apart, and we enjoy bouncing between them.
Most years, we spend a majority of our time at the SC house, but most activities (banking, medical, vet, etc,) are all still in GA.
We also have a couple cars and boats still registered in GA. We have full utilities at both locations, and receive mail at both too.
In 2023, due to various circumstances, we spent significantly less time at the SC house, and WAY more than 183 days in GA.
So my question regards the filing of state income tax: Since we have no income from SC, should we just file as GA resident..?
