Hi everyone,
I am a rising sophomore attending university in the Cambridge, Somerville, Boston area and was thinking of staying in a hotel for part of the week to save on money, rather than leasing a house or staying on campus for the year. My plan was to commute back and forth between the Cambridge Somerville area to where I live which is about an hour away (commute via T and commuter rail). My idea is that I'll travel on Monday from home to school, attend class and then go live in the hotel for a night, go to class Tuesday, stay in the hotel for a night, and then go to classes Wednesday and travel back home. I would take my bike with me and would not mind biking 10-15 min or walking 30 min to and from the hotel to campus.
My main question is what would be the best way to save money. I've been tracking the prices of hotels nearby and have considered applying for a hotel branded credit card for points and free nights (Leaning towards Hyatt or Wyndham). These cards come with a annual fee, but are usually pretty good when staying at a certain chain multiple times. My only concern is that I might be able to get save more and get better prices by simply booking hotel nights opportunistically, looking for deals and cheap nights using the google hotel tracker, and going through third parties like booking.com, Expedia, etc.
I've been reading up on people staying in hotels for retirement, but have not come upon this idea for college housing. Any advice would be appreciated.
