Personal Consumer Issues • Interior paints

Gonna start a round of interior painting soon. Probably doing it mostly myself. To start, two medium size bedrooms, but good chance of other stuff after. I've done interior painting before, but nothing significant for ~10+ years.

The bedrooms in question currently have somewhat complex, fairly intense paint schemes (painted for our then-children, now adults, years ago - repainting because they're old and the paint schemes no longer appropriate). Also, a ~16" strip along the middle of each room will probably have a thin layer of fresh joint compound over it, to cover some old wallpaper accent strips.

I want the painting process to be efficient and the end result to be good, but also, don't want to spend money foolishly. Think each bedroom will be ~2 gallons (so, ~4 total), and there may be a few other gallons for other areas, after.

There's a Lowes close by (Valspar and Sherwin-Williams), plus a dedicated Sherwin-Williams store very close to the Lowe's. Also a Benjamin Moore, and a Home Depot - I've used Behr a fair amount in the past, both for exterior stain, and IIRC, for the last round of interior painting.

Paint prices seem to run ~$20-$105/gallon, and at the Sherwin-Williams store, the guy mentioned periodic sales (30% + $10 off) for their pricey paints. This suggests to me that their "standard" pricing is too high, but I prefer not to bind my purchase times to occasional/periodic sales. The S-W paint sold at Lowe's has various grades/prices, and the names of the grades don't seem to match up to the grades sold directly at the S-W store.

The simplest solution is a one coat, paint+primer coverage of everything, but I wonder if that will really work, given the combinations of different fairly bold paints already on, + raw joint compound on some areas. If 2 coats, better 1 coat primer + 1 coat paint or 2 coats paint, or ???

The S-W salesman said something about higher grades being more washable/durable, and/or going on easier/more robustly in one coat. Not sure how much any of this matters. I've almost never "washed" our painted surfaces, though I do go around and do light touch-ups (over marks, etc.) sometimes.

I also like EZ selection of paint colors from swatches/chips/brochures that give decorating ideas. All brands seem to do this to some extent, but maybe some are better?
