Hey Bogleheads,
We have an interesting dilemma. My wife was laid off last week from her SWE/tech job ($230K/yr) and was given 3mo to find a job internally, plus a generous 15 week severance. This effectively means she's paid through July/Aug without having to do any work. We were planning to use this time to interview prep and find another good paying job in NJ/NYC area. If things go well, she might even start the new job and get severance at the same time. This week, however, she already quickly found a new opportunity internally but it requires relocation to the Bay Area (3 days onsite a week). She really likes the new job and the manager she'll be working with. She always wanted to move there too. Her new job sounds safe from future layoffs, but obviously nothing is guaranteed.
The dilemma here is that we have a 14 month old and my software engr job ($130K/yr) in NJ is very safe and stress-free. We currently have very good work/life balance. Accepting the job means that I would eventually have to move also. That means interview prep etc which can be quite stressful. Bay Area is quite expensive, especially for day care. We don't plan to buy a home there and our current lease is up in September. We also don't have many ties to either area.
If she takes the job, we're thinking of having her fly out there Monday night, and fly back Friday for the first few months to scope things out. During the week, I will basically be a single father for few days. This might be OK but will definitely impact my interview prep. She will miss the baby also, so it's not ideal.
I'm obviously leaning against it. We have close to 1.4M NW, and having next 7 months paid while job hunting makes it an easy choice, but she says she likes the new job
.
