Investing - Theory, News & General • Are we missing out on private companies?

The following are some of the most prominent companies in the US that are not public.

Cargill, Koch, Publix, Mars, Enterprise, Fidelity, Bechtel, McKinsey, Bloomberg, Edward Jones, Chick Fil A, Bain & Co, New Balance, Arco, Kraft, Michaels, Flexport, Epic Systems, SpaceX, Stripe

This is a very large chunk of daily America that is not covered in our investing portfolio. Now, mind you, out of the above SpaceX, Stripe, Epic Systems, and Cargill are what I'd like to own and the rest I don't care for, but it made me think what part of America do we actually index when we buy VTI.

I wonder if there is a comparison somewhere that says you're buying VTI that is 90% of the US economy or something.
