Hi Bogleheads,
I went cross country skiing for the first-time last week and enjoyed it. We have long, cold winters where I live (a new area for me) and a nice cross country skiing area in the national forest so thought this is something I should take up. First experience was good, fell 3-4 times on my first loop (trying to adapt downhill skiing technique to x-country apparently doesn't work!). Had it a little more dialed in the second loop and didn't fall, but very slow. Good experience overall - had a lot of fun and seems like good exercise!
Anyway, as mentioned I am a complete newb. What would you recommend for my first set of skis/boots/poles? I'll be ordering online. Budget is up to $1500 but don't want to pay more than I need to, of course. I'd be looking for that sweet spot where you are getting good stuff and paying more starts getting into diminishing returns. Also bear in mind I'm a complete novice but tend to adapt well to physical activities, so need something newb friendly but with some room to grow.
I understand there are different kinds of skis and different approaches to cross country skiing. My goal is to use x-country skiing more like a hiking opportunity vs doing some kind of thrill sport, more touring than skills/thrills if that makes sense. Not sure if it matters but I'll be starting on groomed trails but hope to get to non-groomed trails as well
Thanks!
