So I am at a crossroads in life and looking for advice. I am 36 and we have about 1.4M in savings - so financially we are in good shape.
My wife and I are from Michigan and our families are still there.
I work for a prime aircraft manufacturer in GA. As far as engineering goes, I have a great job (I call my job corporate Mythbusters). I do cool stuff, dont spend all day in a cube, get paid well, and have all the flexibility I could want with work/life balance. The only real negative is upward mobility is lacking, no other local options as a backup, and I am a bit topped out. My wife has a flexible work life as a specialized nurse. My kids go to private school - as local schools are awful. Kids are 3 and 5.
I occasionally get a bit burnt out and the topped out nature of my position sometimes weighs heavy.
I have had many opportunities to leave for other positions across the country but my wife doesnt want to go anywhere but Michigan if we leave.
I feel like this is my last year to really make a move without really hurting my kids socially.
Michigans economy and political state (not the most business friendly makes me concerned to interject risk by moving.
Pros of moving:
Closer to family
Maybe bring in some rolls with upward mobility/more local options
Maybe wouldnt need private school
Get weather seasons back and freedom to let my kids play in the yard without 50 animals trying to kill them
Escape the "good old boys" culture for role consideration in the company
Cons:
Uprooting kids
Salary will likely fall significantly (make 170k now)
Likely less interesting job and not as cohesive of a team
Likely riskier job as I wont be established
May have to deal with union workforce - cant stand the mentality
Lose my 2% mortgage lol
I am just looking for any life experiences to lean on. I love the freedom my kids get to play in outdoors in MI way more than GA and the family being closer is nice, but its hard to uproot my family in a risky economy to move from a pro business state to a more regulated one. GA is definitely growing while MI is shrinking.
