Much has been written on BH about the importance of creating a “death book” – a list of critical information about oneself so that, upon death, survivors can focus on grieving rather than spending time and energy tracking down passwords, safe deposit box keys, the name of one’s financial advisor, tax accountants, car titles, instructions on how bills are paid, desires for a memorial service, etc.
I am seeking specific, real-life examples of the negative consequences that can occur when this information isn’t properly documented and accessible to survivors for a workshop I’m leading soon.
For instance:
• A survivor might unknowingly have their loved one cremated, only to later discover that the deceased had wished for a traditional burial—a decision that cannot be undone.
• Important benefits, such as those tied to military service, may be missed if the deceased’s history is unknown.
• Money owed to the deceased by friends or relatives could go unclaimed if it isn’t properly documented, leaving the survivor without much-needed funds.
These examples highlight the serious, additional hardships survivors can face when they don’t have access to essential information. I’m looking for more examples to emphasize the importance of making this information available to loved ones.
Thank you in advance for your stories.
