Wondering if there are any expert car Bogleheads out there.
Unfortunately, my wife's mini cooper was just diagnosed with a shot transmission (from a mechanic I've used for years). My mechanic can't do the work on a mini cooper and recommended bringing it to the dealer. I haven't done that yet, however from a quick internet search, transmission replacements on a mini cooper appear to be incredibly expensive (~6K).
The vehicle itself is a 2015 mini cooper and last I checked had a value around ~8-10k.
It seems like a complete waste to burn $ on a repair, however I find myself in a new situation where now there's a nearly undriveable vehicle that is a speciality car that needs work done at a dealership (ugh...). I am worried the sharks at the dealership will circle by recommending a trade-in and we will lose much of the bargaining power to negotiate a vehicle because of the current condition of the existing car.. We do have the ability to walk away because we have a second vehicle, so I can alleviate the pressure of needing a vehicle immediately, but realistically we would want a second operational vehicle at some point in the future.
Anyone found themselves in this situation before and have any recommendations on how to make the best of it?
Thank you
