Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Timeline for Medicare B (re)enrollment

Was wondering if others dealing with Medicare enrollment changes are having such a long wait time, now 2 months +.

Not a new enrollment; I've been on Medicare for a while. I've left employer's plan as of 12/31/23 so I need to re-enroll in Medicare B. Medicare B has to go through Social Security and so far no action. So, also no Medigap until that gets done. (No problem with Part D plan; I sent the forms, and they sent a bill.)

Did the online application on Halloween: Medicare B re-enroll, with filled out forms from employer to show I had coverage all along. Got a confirming email. Waited until mid-December and then contacted SSA since I was soon to be uninsured. After the 1 hr+ wait, the worker told me they had the application, nothing seemed to be missing and it was "in process." Also registered for an online SSA account so I don't have to sit by the phone for an hour or more. The screen said they'd send the access info by mail in "5 to 15 business days" so I guess that is also "in process."

Not the first time I've done this changeover. Left employer's plan and went onto Medicare B once before. Then back onto employer's plan when my work situation changed. Last year I decided to leave employer's plan again so started the process in October after slight delay for HR to correct the L564.

This is an uncomfortable situation to be in, effectively uninsured.

Is anyone else having this 2-month plus timeline? Wondering if it would be worth using one of the few remaining free days to go to SS office?
