In a new construction higher end custom home with brand new level 5 drywall the painter is recommending Dunn Edwards Versawall. He does not intend to use a primer first since the Versawall product is self-priming. The description mentions multi-tenant housing projects which is extremely weird to read when applying to a high end home; I relate apartment paint to the cheapest garbage money can buy but it may also mean the most durable.
I brought this apartment paint concern to the contractor and he talked for 30 minutes about how he has been in the painting business for 20 years and from his experience this is the best stuff because of molecule this and chemistry that. I asked if he could use Dunn Edwards Spartawall and he said if he did, he would have to prime the surfaces which isn't a big deal and overall the costs won't be too much more but then went back to how his experience tells him that it is totally unnecessary and kept pushing for Versawall.
I feel like I'm being sold although this contractor is known to paint higher end custom homes all of the time and so I'm very lost right now.
I'm wondering if any of you have chemistry knowledge or paint industry knowledge concerning if paint "higher end" products are really just a marketing gimmick to try to extract more money out of consumers. The painting contractor said his costs is only a few bucks more for 5 gallon Spartawall versus Versawall so it isn't even a money thing (again his words).
Thank you in advance for any help understanding this world.
