I'm located in Houston metro area and we are about to be barreled by Tropical Storm or Hurricane Beryl.
While I hope we are limited to power outages, I want to be prepared ahead of time what to do in the event there is property damage. We have reinforced doors and Hurricane film on the windows, but what I'm most worried about is roof damage from wind or projectiles such as tree limbs and other debris.
I've never had to deal with storm roof damage before. However in this area, everytime there is a storm, we get multiple "storm chasers" taking advantage of the situation claiming to get a new roof through insurance. My gut instinct is to say "no" and avoid the opportunists, but I don't know what the proper protocol is, especially in the event of roof damage that at least needs a temporary repair/tarping ASAP before permanent repairs or replacement.
What is the process? Who do I contact first, especially if urgent repairs are needed? Insurance, a roofing company, or what? Does a roofing company due the tarping if its needed?
While I'm handy enough to attempt general home repair, I have a bad back that I cannot attempt to tarp/repair a roof myself.
Appreciate the help. I want to know what to do ahead of time just in case, to avoid being taken advantage of when potentially in a vulnerable state? Thanks.
