Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Social Security and Government Pension (Calpers)

When I file for SS at 70, I will collect $4614 monthly. My spouse will collect $3188 monthly from Calpers from a local/city government job's pension. Total we will collect $7802 total monthly when we are both alive.

If I pass away before my spouse, I understand that with GPO, my SS spousal benefit will be reduced by 2/3 of my spouse pension, which means my spouse will collect $2489 from my SS's survivor benefit, while collecting $3188 from my spouse's pension. WEP does not apply in this case.

What happens if my spouse pass away first? If my spouse's Calpers option is $3188 w/ 100% beneficiary (i.e. I am eligible for $3188 as well until I pass away in this case). Will my SS be reduced while receiving $3188 from Calpers? Will WEP apply in this case?

Appreciate any input or correction of my understanding. Thanks!
