Dear Bogleheads,
I am currently working on my 2023 federal and state X (my home state) tax returns using H&R Block software. Also, I have a rental property located in state Y. After accounting for all expenses, including depreciation etc., the total income from the rental property amounted to 0. Consequently, H&R Block indicated 0 tax owed for state Y. While I was given e-file options for both federal and state X returns, I wasn't prompted to file a return for state Y. I am a non-resident of state Y and state Y requires paper forms to be submitted.
My question is: Even though there was no income generated from my rental property in state Y (due to rent being offset by expenses), do I still need to file a state tax return for state Y?
Thanks,
invstar
