I'm seeking insights from individuals who have experience with building custom homes. My spouse and I are planning to relocate within the next 12-24 months upon retirement. We've found that the current homes on the market don't quite align with our specific tastes, which has left us feeling underwhelmed. Consequently, we're contemplating an extensive remodel of an existing home or just having a custom home built giving us complete control of the end product. We are starting to heavily lean towards the custom approach but I am a bit confused on how best to approach this project.
What is the best way to begin:
Find a builder first? Finalize house plans first? Pick the lot?
In my mind, I would think having a builder first could help steer the plans and budget and could also aid in picking the lot best suitable to the project. However, I have read arguments that reverse this. Any thoughts on the best order of operations? If it matters, we have a list of must haves, wants, budget, general area selected, examples of plans (unpurchased - on the internet) and are pretty flexible around other details.
Thanks.
