Personal Consumer Issues • Options during Europe Transportation Strikes

While a reasonably experienced traveler I have never been anywhere during a bus, train, plane strike. I also have always used public transportation over car rentals. We are in the midst of a multi week trip through Austria, Germany and flying back from Paris on Air France.

Only our first 8 nights are booked and the return flight so we have flexibility. Our next stop is Salzburg before heading to Munich and other likely stops are in eastern Germany barring additional train strikes.

If there are more work stoppages should we look into a car rental if the strike is more than a day? Other options? Try to get out of Germany and instead travel through other countries?

Can you rent a car one way from Germany to France or elsewhere? Or rent it and drop it off in a bordering area where a short taxi can get us elsewhere?

Due to our flexibility I am not worrying about it too much but would prefer to know options ahead of the game. Obviously getting stuck in Munich for an extra day is no hardship.

Fortunately even our return flight has some flexibility due to being booked with ff miles. A small fee would be charged to change it if other award seats are available.
Thanks.
