Personal Consumer Issues • Undersizing whole house generator?

Our new home does not have a generator but is located in a town where we could conceivably be offline for a few days to a week from a winter ice storm or summer fire. A whole house generator would be good to add. Our old house had it and we used it several times per year up to 4-5 days longest.

The problem I have is that the new house electrical service includes all electrical HVAC, water heater, pool heater, pumps, steam, sauna and jacuzzi. Needless to say, the service is mammoth. I can't imagine a generator sized for the peak load nor would I want one; over 100 kw. If the power is off, we'll not use anything but limited HVAC, lights, refrigeration, etc.

Question: is there a way to safely provide automatic transfer switch power to only a portion of the house, eg. only select fuse panels to exclude all the pool/spa/steam/sauna equipment? Has anyone done this?

Thanks
